CACTUS stands for Community Action at the University of Strathclyde. It provides an opportunity for students to be more involved with the local community. From helping out with children’s xmas parties to staffing soup kitchens for the homeless it offers students a chance to do something worthwhile.
What do CACTUS volunteers do?
There are a variety of projects including conservation work, volunteering with elderly people and children, assisting charities working with disabled children, adults and staffing soup kitchens for homeless people. CACTUS volunteers also help to develop new projects for the group and involve new students in community action work.
What experience is needed and what commitment is expected?
No
experience is necessary as training for specific projects will be given. Volunteers are expected to attend regular weekly meetings which are held on Wednesdays at 5pm where specific tasks will be discussed and allocated.
What resources and support is available?
CACTUS are given an annual budget by the Students' Association and office space on Level 7. Support is directly available from the Vice President Activities & Development and the Student Activities Development Co-ordinator.
What will volunteers get out of it?
There are many benefits including the chance to meet new people and to work as part of a team whilst developing a wide range of skills and giving something back to the community.
