How did you get involved in USSA?
In my final year at University, I wanted to do something different. All my friends had graduate jobs but I didn't want to do a 'regular' job so I stood for election! Being VP and now President has presented me with opportunities that I wouldn't have had access to and it's an amazing place to work
Why do you think other students should get involved in USSA?
From my experience, the Association has something for everyone and if you're the type of person that can inspire and motivate others as well as championing student representation, then YOU should get involved as soon as you can!
What are your 3 big aims for the year ahead?
- Create a learning agreement with YOUR needs at the heart of it. This agreement will set out to the University the teaching standards that you expect in the lecture theatre and tutorials! Look out for the Executive on campus who will be finding out what you think!
- Free language classes for all… As our environment becomes more global, it is important that you are able to develop your cultural awareness as well as your knowledge in world languages. So watch this space if you're interested!
- Student-led leadership programme for young people… Being based in the city centre of Glasgow, we have a duty to engage with the wider community to ensure the benefits of the Association are shared by everyone around us. This programme will aim to use the skills and knowledge of Strathclyde students to work with young people who are not in education, employment or training, in order to develop their skills set and confidence.
And, finally, when you grow up, what do you want to be?!
Prime Minister!

How did you get involved in USSA?
I initially got involved as BUNAC Society treasurer at the start of last year and then sat on the Clubs & Societies Executive which gave me a bit of an insight into how the Union is run and how important a part volunteering plays within USSA. Now being part of the Executive, I feel I'm an example of how easy it is to get involved and how quickly the opportunities open up if you're willing to give it a go!
Why do you think other students should get involved in USSA?
You're given the freedom to come up with ideas and given the support to take ownership of them and make them happen. Getiing involved provides the opportunities to meet loads of new people including chances to network with graduate employers. It also looks fantastic on your CV and helps you stand out from the crowd.
What are your 3 big aims for the year ahead?
- Increase networking opportunities between you as students and external partners within all faculties, creating links which can be carried on throughout your entire University experience and benefit you when you become a Strathclyde Graduate.
- To encourage the sharing of cultures within our student body and provide you with as much information as possible about opportunities abroad. Whether working, studying, volunteering or travelling, the possibilities are endless and I want to help you realise that it could so easily be you!
- To make Clubs & societies accessible to all, instilling in you the confidence to come to me and ask how to go about joining a club. I'll also make sure that if you have an idea for a club which isn't currently on offer, you have all the support to set it up and run it!
And, finally, when you grow up, what do you want to be?!
Happy and successful!

I first started getting involved in USSA in my second year with the Welcome Team. It was a long, hard, yet very rewarding experience. After the Welcome Team I got really involved in other groups such as LGBT, the Politics Society and a few others.
Why do you think other students should get involved in USSA?
Students should get involved as there are so many different opportunities for them out there. The Association provides so much for students, from sports clubs, interest clubs, liberation groups and course specific volunteering. All of which enhances your experience as a Strathclyde student.

How did you get involved in USSA?
I worked here for 2 years as a member of Bar Staff. Through this I got a real insight into what the Union is and how it works. Speaking to students on a daily basis made me want to get involved to help make their experience the best it could be.
Why do you think other students should get involved in USSA?
Getting involved is one of the best ways to understand how we can change things around here. Not only this but it's a fantastic way to make friends, further your interests or try new things, and lastly it can help you gain skills and even achieve opportunities for your future.
What are your 3 big aims for the year ahead?
- Continued improvement and capability of the Media Groups
- Ensuring that the Union stays a fun and safe space for students
- Break down barriers/stigma and ensure that students feel comfortable using ASK and Nightline

Vice President Sports, Physical Activities & Wellbeing | Karen MacKellar
How did you get involved in USSA?
In first year one of the first things I did to get involved with the University experience, since I was a home student, was to join the Netball Club and the Sports Union. This progressed into becoming a volunteer through my various Club Committee roles over the years and taking up a position on the Sports Union Executive.
Why do you think other students should get involved in USSA?
You will get more from University by getting involved outside your studies, and the Union is so much more than just the bars with genuinely something for everyone. Sport at Strathclyde is just one example of that and the perfect way to complete your University experience, keep fit and find a whole new social experience at the same time.
What are your 3 big aims for the year ahead?
- To create a greater sense of a Strathclyde community within sport including encouraging attendance at home fixtures, more all-club events and greater promotion of our successes.
- Providing opportunities for the wider student body to try out and participate in sport and physical activity at a time where sport is so important within the UK and particulary Glasgow, with both the Olympic and Commonwealth games just around the corner.
- Improving on last years results by achieving more BUCS points/a higher position on last year and not forgetting claiming back the City of Glasgow Cup!!!
And, finally, when you grow up, what do you want to be?!
I'd like to use my Management Science degree and progress into Management Consultancy, with my own side business of event/wedding planning and building in my keen interest in sport where possible!!
