Healthy Body Healthy Mind

Healthy Body Healthy Mind is campaign launched by NUS Scotland and Scottish Student Sport in 2010/11 to award colleges and universities, who promote, encourage and actively involve students in events that connect the ethos that sport and exercise maintain good mental wellbeing.  This year I have made Healthy Body Healthy Mind (HBHM) one of my two key objectives for my year in office.

I was involved with the Sports Union as part of the University’s Equestrian Club for 4 years before being elected as Vice President Sports & Wellbeing.  I have always been passionate about sport and whole heartedly agree that there are many benefits to an active life style.  There are obviously physical benefits to being active but there are also bonuses to your mental health and your social life as you met new people might otherwise never have bumped into on campus.

This year I really want to give Wellbeing aspect of my role an equal weighting with Sport.  Over the summer I have worked with USSA staff to plan at least one wellbeing event a month for the rest of my elected year as part of my HBHM strategic plan.  We’re got lots of things planned already including some annual events like Exam Bootcamp, some new things to surprise you with and we're buddying up with some national campaigns to bring you some big and bold health messages.

Even though I’ve been busy all summer with HBHM planning there is always room for more ideas and it would be great to have as many of you involved as possible.  So if you want to get involved with any of the campaigns below or have ideas for campaigns you’d like me to include my HBHM strategy this year please get in touch!  I’d be especially interested to hear from anyone who would like to support Coppafeel, a breast cancer awareness group by setting up a Uni Boob Team at Strathclyde and someone up for championing a Movember campaign to promote men’s’ health!  I look forward to hearing from you!

HBHM campaigns for you to look out for this year include:

Freshers Detox

Body Image campaign

Tackling Anxiety, Stress & Depression

Exam Bootcamp

Challenging Stigma & Raising Awareness of Mental Health Conditions

Drugs & Alcohol Survey
