Strathclyde Students’ Association New Building Update

As you’re all no doubt aware, over the past few months there has been increasing discussion about the university’s plan for campus, and more importantly how the Union fits into this. For those of you who don’t know, the new Students’ Association Executive have just taken up office, and we’re committed to ensuring that your views are represented and that you’re kept fully informed of the entire process, outcomes, and potential. As such we’ve uploaded the minutes from the last meeting with the university’s Estates Management people, which focused on The Union and its future. Hopefully these will explain where we’re at and where we’re going, and give you the ability to make an informed opinion on the process and have your say.

On a more general note, I’d just like to say that overall we are happy with the ways in which we are being involved in the process, and feel that we are being listened to and considered. However, we still have concerns about the lack of speed in the process and the constant need for open and clear communication in the entire process.

We will continue to fight for your Union building, and as such welcome any comments and/or suggestions on the future of the Union, and what it should look like; feel free to get in touch via president@theunion.strath.ac.uk and check out our Facebook group by searching for “Strathclyde Students Association Executive”.

In the meantime, enjoy your summer, and we’ll see you at Freshers’ Week!

Your President on the Governance Review

Friday, 27 February 2009

As election fever takes over the campus, it’s time once again for you, the students of Strathclyde, to decide who will be running their Union next year. Not only that, but you will also get to have your say on how the Union will be run in the future, with two new models of governance being put to a referendum. Let’s be honest, a governance review sounds pretty dry. But if you look at the proposals, you’ll hopefully agree that this is an exciting opportunity to shape the future of this organisation. USSA is the first union to make this a two year process. If our proposals are passed, it will be for the newly elected executive to continue the work and fine-tune the models before the ultimate decision is taken next year. So firstly, why a review in the first place?

So that was Freshers' Week
