On the 24th April 2014 we asked all students studying at the University of Strathclyde "Should Scotland be an independent country?"

We recieved 856 ballots, which equates to a 5% turnout.

The results were as follows:

  • YES: 386 (45%)
  • NO: 467 (55%)

USSA would like to give its thanks to all those that took part in our debates, either as panelists or audience members. We also offer special thanks to the two campaign teams - Better Together Strathclyde and Yes! Strathclyde for their work encouraging students to vote on the day.

Scottish Independence Debate

In less than one year from now, the people of Scotland will be asked to make the biggest constitutional decision of their lifetime.

Are you ready to vote?

The University of Strathclyde Students’ Association (USSA), is keen to help our members engage with the opportunity to choose Scotland’s future. We’ll be hosting a series of panel debates throughout the year to explore the possibilities of independence. This is your chance to direct questions to a panel of politicians and representatives from both ‘Yes Scotland’ and ‘Better Together’.

Finally, the campaign will climax with a mock referendum on Thursday 24th April, in which the students of Strathclyde will be empowered to indicate their preference a mere five months ahead of the real event.

Remember, that in order to vote in the official referendum you must be registered to vote well in advance. Make sure you don’t miss the chance to have your say by registering in time. If you’re not currently registered, look out for the registration drives that will take place on the same days as the debates in either The Union Reception or the Curran Library Foyer.
