President - Neil Campbell Neil

I’m Neil and I’m a 22 year-old Politics and Economics student. The Union has played a big part in my life since moving to Glasgow from the Highlands four years ago: I’ve represented Strathclyde students within our Student Representative Council for three years, and at the National Union of Students; I’ve greeted freshers’ with the Welcome Team; I’ve learned new skills on the Training Team and I’ve developed my leadership skills as Debates Convenor. I’m no stranger to the Barony either.

I realise however, that the Union isn’t as important to some students, and that’s what I want to change. As your Union President, my objectives will be to:

·        lead a more visible Executive that gets out and engages more with students;

·        strengthen communication links between students and their representatives;

·        fight to abolish hidden charges for essential course materials;

·        provide more diverse entertainment for all of our students - including those at Jordanhill - without trying to ban TFI;

·        deliver plans for a new Union building that meets the needs of today’s - and tomorrow’s - students.

So if you care about your Union, vote for me. If you don’t, then definitely vote for me. I won’t let you down.

PresidentImran “Norris” Hussain Imran

Students attending university is like making ethanol from sugar beet. High school will mash and ferment the primary “glucose” school students to mature young “dilute ethanol” adults. Strathclyde then takes them in using high pressure, and energy distils them to 95% volume ethanol. But that still leaves a 5% deficit. Who, or what can dehydrate the ethanol further?

I see our Union as a molecular sieve: one half is saturating the students, supporting their every desire; and the other is being regenerated. That’s where I, as President, step in. I am the 1, 2-dichloroethane that invigorates and volatizes the water, AKA: the union staff! I am the crucial component which ensures the end product, our students being 100% satisfied.

This may seem a rather academic approach, but I’m really not a dork. My proposals speak for themselves in terms of substance, and this election is about ideas rather than gimmicks. Our Union needs more staff during busy nights, better quality toilets for students, a decent sandwich bar. Getting the Union involved in more community projects is something I believe is equally vital to make Strathclyde more than just a commuter university and again a known pillar of Glasgow.

President - Jonathon Shafi Jonathon

I am a fourth year student studying Politics and Sociology. In these elections I am running for President on several key issues and campaigning themes:

For the last 4 years I have been campaigning over a range of issues, from Fair Trade to the war on Iraq. I have built links between various groups and as a member of Strathclyde Stop the War Coalition have established links with Strathclyde University Muslim Students Association, Strathclyde Amnesty International and People and Planet.

 If you want a professional campaigner, with a track record and a genuine and credible voice to represent you, then a vote for me will secure an experienced, visible and approachable President. I will fight on every level for the benefit of students.

Vote for an active campaigning union. Vote for an active President.

NicoleDeputy President - Nicole McCaffery

Hi, I’m Nicole McCaffery and I’m standing to be your next Deputy President. I’m 22, currently studying Mathematics and Computing Science and enjoying my time as a student at Strathclyde. I have two years experience on SRC using my voice to help protect the interests of students and this year was also elected to a position on the Campaigns Committee. My experience is further enhanced by my position as our union's Women’s Officer, previously a club chair and campaign manager for the NUS referendum last year.

That’s just part of why voting for me as Deputy could be the simplest choice you will have to make in these elections. As Deputy President, I will work for you to make the Union more inclusive and even more welcoming for international students and freshers. I believe our Union should be a strong campaigning force for students.. because no one else will represent us! I would like to see us campaign for free dental care, as well as for cheaper TV licenses for students and against the graduate endowment.

Let's put the interests of students first!

Vote for experience. Vote for a positive future. Vote Nicole McCaffery for your Deputy President!

BryanDeputy President - Bryan Simpson

As Deputy President I wish to re-install a sense of pride into this great university by establishing it on the international map both politically and socially.

I want the most prestigious of Britain’s speakers to be attracted to a Strathclyde whose student population boasts some of the most diverse political minds of the future. As Deputy President I will ensure a contingency fund to subsidise trips to London on a regular basis thus ensuring that StrathclydeUniversity is represented at every major event whether it be a protest or an international conference.

By bringing the country’s most up and coming artists to the Union as part of the NME Love Music Hate Racism tour I wish to establish Strathclyde as the social venue in Scotland.

I wish to change the status of this University so that when people think of political institutions, they don’t think of St. Andrews, Edinburgh or Glasgow they think of Strathclyde! By voting me in as Depute President you will already have changed things yourself because for the first time you will have voted for something you believe in. Not a face or a name or a slogan but an idea an idea for change.

Vice President Student Development - Ben Docherty Ben

I’m a twenty year old joint honours politics and history student and have written for the Strathclyde Telegraph throughout my time at university serving as elected news editor in my third year. This year I worked with freshers on the Law Arts & Social Science induction programme and joined the Debates Society.

The Union is more than a building. Beside the bars it offers exciting opportunities to volunteer, have a laugh and make your voice heard.

But ultimately it is only as good as those volunteers. Better trained, more engaged volunteers will benefit from their experiences, developing their potential, whilst the Union and wider student body will likewise reap the dividends of their efforts.

If you elect “Big Ben” as your Vice President Student Development I will strive to ensure that the students of this association, in all faculties, of all ages and on both campuses make the most of their time at Strathclyde.

My priorities?

Make use of social networking websites to make Union Groups more accessible to students.

Have dedicated office hours.

Liaise with faculties from freshers’ week through the academic year, so they and their students know what services, clubs and societies their Union has to offer.

Vice President Student Development – Neil “Nelly” McGuire Nelly

Hi I’m Neil ‘Nelly’ McGuire and I am running for Vice President Student Development. I am a 4th year student studying Engineering and Enterprise Management in the department of Design, Manufacture & Engineering Management.

I have been involved with the Union for nearly 3 years now and have spent that time with RAG the Strathclyde Students’ Charity Appeal; initially as general volunteer, then last year as the Treasurer and this year as the convenor.

I believe you should elect me because I plan to:
-         Increase membership of SRC groups;
By having a greater publicity campaign for the sign up fairs.
-         Have better communication and work relationships between the different SRC groups;
Next year I plan on the groups getting involved with each other a little more and to help blur the boundaries between one group and another and help groups get to know each other better.
-         Make volunteering fun;
This year a fuseball table was installed into level seven and has been one of the year’s best ways of inter-group interaction. I plan on having a couple more added for the volunteers use. I feel that a happy volunteer is a volunteer more likely to get involved.

Vice President Student Development - Suki SanghaSuki

I am an Honours Sociology student standing for Vice President Student Development officer. Through my experiences as a student representative and student Ambassador within the university I am particularly appreciative of the opportunities available to all Strathclyde students. For me this role is about enhancing student participation for all Strathclyde students on both the John Anderson and Jordanhill campus. If elected, I will actively promote the activities on offer to give all students the opportunity to gain a fuller university experience. It’s never too late to get involved in student life and I hope to motivate students and encourage them to be more enthusiastic about life on campus. If elected Vice President Student Development officer I will engage with the student population to find out the issues most important to you. I will be campaigning on a range of issues including:

Vice President Student Development“BEAKER”Blair Scott BEAKER

Hi my name is Blair Scott, also known as Beaker. I am a final year Biomedical Sciences student and have been involved in The Union for most of my time at Strathclyde, through the Student's Representative Council, clubs, and as a member of the Clubs & Societies Executive.
To many people Student Development is about how students can get involved in The Union through the various activities and how these can prepare you for your career. For me, however, Student Development is about preparing all students, even if you can't volunteer within The Union, for life after Strathclyde.

As VPSD I will:
·        Encourage all involvement groups to work together
·        Work with other members of the Executive to ensure adequate volunteers for ASK, Nightline, SMT, Telegraph and Fusion
·        Investigate ways to reward volunteers, and continue the current Volunteer Awards
·        Strive to offer opportunities for all students to gain valuable training and skills

I would also like to develop the spaces available for student activities and encourage the involvement groups to maintain their high quality of activity.

I will also strive to operate an open door at all times and would urge you to vote 'BEAKER' Blair Scott for VPSD.
