Would love to see the library
Would love to see the library open 24 hours. I always find myself working through the night, but can't do that at the library, which is a shame.
Library Opening Times
24hr opening of the lib would be really good, but alternatively later opening at night and earlier in the morning (from 6am) would also be a good improvement. Especially, I would very much like the lib to be open for at least a couple of hours during the Christmas vacation! Any chance this might happen?
Library opening hours
Glasgow University Library is not open 24 hours at exam time. However, it has been open until 2am year-round for a while:
Open 361 days of the year from 07:15-02:00
[from www.lib.gla.ac.uk]
not sure how well used that is during vacation though. Was there at 10:45pm last night, seemed quite busy, Glasgow exams are before christmas.
Extended opening hours are useful, but could result in shorter (library) staff hours, to enable more hours for security staff, as am assuming there isn't any more money for the library...
Self service is great until you have a problem with your library account, then you are frozen out and need library staff intervention.
Do think that the Strathclyde hours need overhauling, but not sure the Glasgow model is the way to go...
Library Opening hours
I strongly agree that the library should be open 24 hours all times. not only during exams. The school should inform the students why they can't provide that.
Library Opening Hours
Workers do nightshift in all walks of life and i would imagine there will be security guards in and around the student halls of residence at night should they ever be required. There is therefore no reason why the university couldn't extend this to the library facilities as books can be checked out electronically!!
Merely being there and drinking their coffee would be massively beneficial to students and they'd be paid extra for doing nightshift anyway... i would hope!
library times
when I was studying for my undergraduate at Strathclyde the library was open for 24 hours in my first year this however, did not continue for the duration of my course and can only surmise that it was not well utilized. perhaps the university can inform us why the opening hours did not continue?
Opening hours
Glasgow University is open til 2am at term time and open 24 hours at exam time. Although it would indeed be beneficial to stay open longer during term time, it may not be fair on the staff to ask them to do this, also, the university would no doubt have to hire more staff for a major extension in the opening times. So extending the opening times would be beneficial to students, even if not too many vote for a 24 hour system, the amount that do vote would still find it to be beneficial - how can it be fair that it needs to be a majority of the students who agree, especially when it wouldn't be a large majority who are staying late anyway? And the second question is, does the university actually have the resources to pay staff to work these hours?
With regard to opening hours
Having come from another UK university, a key thing i found useful was that the library was open 24 hours during the examination period lasting 4 weeks each term. Therefore, I think the strathclyde library should also follow the same policy as it will prove very beneficial to students.
Many thanks
