 The University of Strathclyde Students’ Association is seeking to recruit a Policy & Campaigns Adviser to further develop the quality and impact of the Association’s policy development and campaigning activities.

Reporting to the Engagement & Support Manager, and working closely with a democratically elected Executive Committee, the successful candidate will facilitate activities that will allow USSA to maintain a high profile for its strategic objectives through an effective campaigning and influencing strategy, targeted at decision makers at a local, national and institutional level. 

The main responsibilities of the role include:-

  • Work with the Executive Committee to advise on and support Elected Students Officers to develop policy solutions to address the needs of students.
  • Monitor the activities of government, political parties, pressure groups and appropriate agencies with regard to how political and policy developments may affect students at Strathclyde.
  • Work with the Executive to build and maintain a close network of, and relationships with, relevant decision makers in order to influence policy. 
  • Liaise with the Communications Manager in the co-ordination of the Association’s press work in order to enhance the associations’ media impact, with specific relation to Higher Education policy. 
  • Provide information and support in the effective planning and execution of Association campaigns and oversee the calendar of campaigns within the Association.
  • Prepare consultation responses and other documents to inform and influence decision makers on the needs of students.
  • Support the Executive to prepare written briefings, letters and bulletins on issues within areas of responsibility, adapting these as necessary for different audiences.

Democracy & Representation Coordinator

£20,972 Gross Per Annum

The University of Strathclyde Students’ Association is looking to appoint a Democracy & Representation Coordinator within our busy, student-facing Engagement & Support Department. 

This role will work closely with elected officers and volunteers to provide effective support systems for representation of Strathclyde students at local and national levels and effectively promote opportunities for participation in the Association’s democratic structures. The post is also responsible for recruitment, training and support of all Class & Faculty Representatives across the University, encouraging student-led campaigns at a grass roots level. Furthermore, the post looks to engage with our members on topical student issues from discussions & debate, to campaigns and policy development.

The main responsibilities of the role include:-
  • Run effective support systems and effectively promote opportunities for participation in the Association’s democratic systems, seeking to increase student engagement
  • Ensure academic representatives at all levels are trained to a suitable standard in order to support the effective functioning of the Academic Representation system
  • Plan and organise meetings of Student Congress and other cross-departmental meetings of academic representatives
  • Provide information and support in the effective planning and execution of campaigns, supporting the Executive Committee to plan and organise the annual calendar of campaigns 
  • Provide assistance and secretariat support to the Policy Council, plus associated committees, ensuring accurate records are kept and information is made available to the membership
  • Provide support in the planning of, and assist in the execution of, General Meetings and Policy Council, ensuring all policies passed are recorded and collated, and assist Officers in ensuring policy compliance
