ASK

ASK stands for Advice, Support and Knowledge and is based in The Lounge, Level 5 of the Union Building and behind Toby's bar at the Jordanhill campus. This is where students go for help if they are stressed, worried or have any problems. Help is offered with many issues including health, academic, financial, and accommodation problems.

What do ASK volunteers do?

Tasks are varied and include: assisting with basic enquiries and treating all clients in a non-judgemental and empathic manner whilst respecting confidentiality; developing skills and knowledge on welfare issues and working towards dealing with casework;  becoming familiar with roles of internal and external referral agencies; organising campaigns for ASK and the Union and adhering to guidelines.

What experience is needed and what commitment is expected?

Full training will be given but an awareness of and interest in issues affecting students would be helpful. Volunteers are expected to assist with campaigns throughout the year, attend training sessions and to help with enquiries at the ASK office on a rota basis.

What resources and support is available?

All volunteers will be given comprehensive training and have full support from the Vice President Support and Campaigns and the Student Advisers.  A network of support is also available through the University and external agencies.

What will volunteers get out of it?

There are many benefits including: transferable skills for use in the workplace, evidence on your CV of skills gained, team working skills and the opportunity to gain an understanding of student issues.

How do I join and where can I find out more?

Due to the nature of the work ASK volunteers are required to undergo an informal interview process.  Further information and application forms are available from the ASK office, Level 5 of the Union Building or the office behind Toby’s Bar at Jordanhill or by emailing ask@theunion.strath.ac.uk or telephoning 0141 567 5040.
