You would not be alone if you think that women have achieved equality already but this is STILL not true- even in the UK! There is still a lot to be done and some issues affecting women include the Gender Pay gap, the right to access an abortion, the right not to be raped or subject to violent or emotional abuse and access to childcare, particularly when a parent student!
The Women’s Group exists to provide support for Women students and to campaign on issues affecting Women across campus, nationally and world-wide. Volunteers work closely with the Women’s Officer, NUS Women’s and other institutions. All female students at Strathclyde are automatically members of the Women’s Group, however men are more than welcome to join as volunteers!
As women, we should be empowered and work with other women to achieve the equality we deserve. Volunteers will enjoy working with the Women’s Group as they will be educated on issues still affecting women and gain lots of skills through campaigning and meeting others. Please e-mail us if interested: ussa.womensofficer@strath.ac.uk
What do Women’s Group volunteers do?
The Women’s Group volunteers’ tasks do vary throughout the year. Volunteers would take part in campaigns, attend Women’s Group meetings and socials, meet other students and act as a support network for all involved in the group.
What experience is needed and what commitment is expected?
No experience is needed! As regards commitment, the Women’s Group feels that your degree comes first so as much or as little as you can help out with! Volunteers are expected to be friendly and accepting towards sensitive issues. Also, both men and women are allowed to be involved in volunteering with the Women’s Group.
What resources and support is available?
The Women’s Group receives an annual budget from the Student Representative Council (SRC) and has a shared space (called the “Liberation Room”) with the other liberation groups on level 6 of the Union (behind the Debates Chamber). Also, computers and office facilities are available in the Liberation Room and on Level 7 of the Union building. The Women’s Officer provides a drop-in hour to offer support & information for women, to express their concerns about policy within the Association and those interested in the Women’s campaign. The Women’s Committee meets regularly to develop policy for Women students and the Women’s Officer stands to represent Women students and the Group itself.
What will volunteers get out of it?
Volunteers will have the experience of dealing with Women issues and be educated on the reality that women still face inequality world-wide. They will also get the chance to meet other students at Strathclyde, other institutions through NUS and, most importantly, have fun with campaigning and by attending meetings and social events.
How do I join and where can I find out more?
